Dental Cavities
Tooth decay is a common disorder and is a common cause of tooth loss. Bacteria found in the mouth can change food, especially sugar and starch, into acids. The combination of bacteria, acid, food particles, and saliva forms plaque. The acids in plaque damage the enamel of teeth and create holes in teeth (cavities).
When cavities grow large, it can affect the nerves or cause a tooth fracture. Untreated, a cavity can lead to a tooth absess (infection) or tooth loss.
How to Prevent Cavities
- Brush your teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily to remove plaque build up
- Visit the dentist regularly for a cleaning and exam
- Maintain a healthy diet with limited sugary snacks and soda
Dental Cavities Symptoms
There may be no recognizable symptoms in the early stages of tooth decay. A dental exam can expose the early signs of tooth decay and can prevent the cavity from forming or getting worse.
If symptoms occur, they may include:
- Toothache
- Tooth sensitivity, especially after eating foods that are hot, cold, or sweet
- Visible pits or holes in teeth
Dental Cavity Treatment
We provide a number of general dentistry treatments to provide stability and protection to affected teeth. These procedures include fillings, onlays, and dental crowns. If the tooth decay is extensive, a root canal may be required.
Regular cleanings and exams will help prevent tooth decay. Early treatment can save the tooth and is often less painful and less expensive.
